The city is bordered by the town of Monroe to the north and the town of Clarno to the south. Monroe is a part of the Madison metropolitan area. It is nicknamed the "Cheese Capital of the USA".

The Freitag Homestead is a historic farm begun in 1848 in the town of Washington, Green County, Wisconsin. It is also the site of the first Swiss cheese factory in Wisconsin. The farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
New Glarus is a village in Green County, Wisconsin, United States at the intersection of Wisconsin Highways 69 and 39. It has a population of 2,266 according to the 2020 census. [2] The village, and the town that surrounds it, were named after the canton of Glarus in eastern Switzerland. [6] The community was founded in 1845 by immigrants from that canton and was incorporated in 1901.
The Green County Courthouse, located on Courthouse Square in Monroe, is the county courthouse serving Green County, Wisconsin. Built in 1891, it is the county's second permanent courthouse. Architect G. Stanley Mansfield designed the Richardsonian Romanesque building. The courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
