Founded in 1879, it is the third-oldest public college or university in Texas. It is one of the first normal schools west of the Mississippi River and the first in Texas.
Prospective students apply through the Texas Medical & Dental Schools Application Service (TMDSAS). The college awards the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree (DO). The program consists of four years of curriculum, with years 1 and 2 consisting of on-campus didactic lectures, small group assignments laboratory and clinical experience, while years 3 and 4 are completed at selected clinical sites.

KSHU-FM first signed on the air on August 1, 1974 at 89.3 FM, operating with 10 watts. Broadcast studio space was originally located in the basement of the university’s Peabody Memorial Library. In 1988, the radio station boosted its power, moved to the current operating frequency, and relocated to the recently built Communication Building.
