He was born on August 22, 1890 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was the son of the eminent gynaecologist, Alexander Hugh Freeland Barbour and Margaret Nelson Brown. From 1899 he attended Merchiston Castle School in the south of Edinburgh. In 1906 he left the school to attend Marburg University in Germany for one year.
In 2017, he enrolled at Ashland University in the United States and played college football for five seasons. In December 2022, Brown signed a two-year deal with Liga 1 side Persebaya Surabaya. On 18 January 2023, he made his professional debut as a substitute in a 5–0 win over Persita. On 15 November 2023, Brown was released by the club.
The Women's College in Brown University, known as Pembroke College, was founded in October 1891. Upon its 1971 merger with the College of Brown University, Pembroke's campus was absorbed into the larger Brown campus. The Pembroke campus is bordered by Meeting, Brown, Bowen, and Thayer Streets and sits three blocks north of Brown's central campus.
George Williams College was a campus of Aurora University located on Geneva Lake in Williams Bay, Wisconsin, United States. The campus was previously part of an independent college that was first based in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois, and later in Downers Grove, Illinois. Aurora University closed the campus in December 2023.
