Sasebo was a popular liberty port for navy personnel. In September 1945, the U.S. Marine Corps ' Fifth Division landed at Sasebo, and in June 1946, U.S. Fleet Activities Sasebo was established. When war broke out in Korea three years later, Sasebo became the main launching point for the United Nations and the U.S. Forces.
The Naval Service ( Irish: An tSeirbhís Chabhlaigh) is the maritime component of the Defence Forces of Ireland and is one of the three branches of the Irish Defence Forces. In addition, the Charleston Naval Shipyard repaired frigates, destroyers, cruisers, sub tenders, and submarines. The Shipyard was also equipped for the refueling of nuclear subs.
