In 2009, Lamar CISD was named an H.E.B. Excellence in Education School District. Dr. Thomas Randle served as the district superintendent from 2001 until his retirement in 2021. During his tenure, LCISD grew from approximately 16,000 students to 34,000 students. There were 36,345 students in 2020, and 44,385 students in 2024.

On March 20, 2023, a shooting occurred outside of Lamar, resulting in the death of a male student and a female injured. A third student, who was the shooter, ran away but was arrested moments later by the Arlington Police Department. The investigation is still ongoing and the identity of the suspect is unknown due to his status as a minor.

Lamar High School is a comprehensive public secondary school located in Houston, Texas, United States.It is a part of the Houston Independent School District (HISD). Lamar High School, was established in 1936 in memory of Mirabeau B. Lamar (1798–1859), a leader in the Texas Revolution and the second President of the Republic of Texas.
The school colors and mascot were chosen by a 2020 survey of area middle and high school students. The mascot chosen was the lions, and the school colors selected were black and silver. It opened with grades 9 and 10, and will expand to other grades later. References
