In September 1972, 5,667 students entered the new state university, the largest opening day enrollment at the time. Eighty percent of the student body had just graduated from Dade County Junior College (now Miami-Dade College). A typical student entering FIU was 25 years old and attending school full-time while holding down a full-time job.
In 1968, the college relocated to its present site (now "northwest Miami"). By 1972, it graduated its first class at the Miami site. Florida Memorial College celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1979 and began a series of expansion projects on the 44-acre (180,000 m 2) campus. In 1993, Albert E. Smith was appointed as the college's tenth president.
MLEC has 26 different strands spread among five magnet academies. Although the school is not recognized as a magnet program by Miami-Dade County Public Schools, as it does not receive specialized magnet funding, the school retains the ability to require students to complete an application form, and may admit students from areas outside of traditional school boundaries.
On June 8, Miami Archbishop John C. Favalora sent a letter to Sister Roche granting her request to restore “Immaculata” to the school's name. 2007 marked the 45th anniversary of the founding of Immaculata-La Salle High School. 2006 marked the 45th anniversary of La Salle High School's founding in Miami, Florida.
