DIU is the first university in Bangladesh to have signed the UN's Commitment to Sustainable Practices of Higher Education Institutions. According to the SCOPUS indexed research publications in 2022, Daffodil International University has been positioned 2nd among all universities and 1st among all private universities in Bangladesh.
The initial planning began in 1994 but the university was established in 1995. In fact, DIU takes the initiative strongly for the creation of non-government universities and supports the initiative of the Government of Bangladesh. It is now operated as a government-approved university under the Non-Government University Acts of 1992 and 1998.
In February 2023, ULAB established two new departments, the Bangla Department and the Literature Department. The university is the first institute of higher education in Bangladesh to teach ethnic minority languages, of which Bangladesh has 44 according to Shameem Reza. Authorized by Private University Act 1992, the university was established on 18 August 2004, after getting approval from the University Grants Commission Bangladesh. Anwara Begum, first women vice-chancellor in Bangladesh, was founding vice-chancellor of the university. It had temporary campus in Uttara, Panthapath, Mirpur, Paltan and Banani.
The awarded degree from the private university is equivalent to a degree obtained from any public university of Bangladesh. But the authorities of this university are now divided in four separate groups and running their activities form different campuses. As of August 2017, the university was functioning under stay order from the court.
The university's campus is located in Bashundhara Residential Area in Dhaka. It is one of the largest private universities in Bangladesh in terms of student population. The foundation of the campus was laid on 30 January 2003 by Begum Khaleda Zia, then prime minister of Bangladesh. Classes started in the permanent (current) campus from 9 June 2009.
The university played a significant role in the Bengali Language Movement when Bengalis joined to fight against Urdu being the sole official language in East Pakistan. Dhaka University was the main place where the movement started with the students joining and protesting against the Pakistan Government.
