Thanks to increasing dissatisfaction with leadership of Manatee County, in 1921 several influential Sarasotans pushed for the creation of a new county and on May 12, 1921, Governor Cary Hardee signed a bill creating Sarasota County, with Sarasota serving as the county seat.
