An 1861 oil portrait of Matthew Vassar by Charles Loring Elliott. Vassar was founded as a women's school under the name Vassar Female College in 1861. [8] Its first president was Milo P. Jewett, who had previously been first president of another women's school, Judson College; [9] he led a staff of ten professors and twenty-one instructors. [10]
I. C. Norcom High School is at 1801 London Boulevard between the revitalized downtown and the Midtown Tunnel. It was opened September 1997 under the leadership of Walter Taylor. The first graduating class of the new location was the class of 1998, but the first graduating class that attended four years at this school was the class of 2002.
The school system has expanded to include over 196 schools and centers, including 22 high schools, three secondary schools, 23 middle schools, and 141 elementary schools. Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) also operates a fleet of over 1520 school buses, which transport 110,000 students daily.

The population was 2,727 at the 2020 census and 2,697 in 2010 (an increase of about 1.1%). The city is located on the western edge of Vassar Township but is administratively autonomous.
Former Brentwood Middle School principal Bill Harlin was the founding principal of Nolensville High School and held that position until 2021. [6] [7] He was succeeded in the 2021-22 school year by Amy Maffei, who is the current principal. [8] The school has three assistant principals: Ellen Brown, David Vassar, and Brad Blakeley. [9]
Union Grove was also recognized in 2015 as a Top AP School. Union Grove High School is the only school in Henry County Schools to be named an AP Merit school by the College Board. Union Grove was also named by the College Board as an AP STEM, AP Humanities, AP STEM Achievement and AP Honors School for the 10th consecutive year in 2016.
