Renown Health, formerly known as the Washoe Health System, was founded in 1862 during a smallpox outbreak. [4] The clinic became the area's first hospital when Nevada became a state in 1864. [ 4 ] In 1875, 40 acres were purchased and the hospital opened the following year with 40 beds.
In 2006, Washoe Health System changed its name to Renown Health. [3] The Renown Regional Medical Center opened a new pediatric intensive care unit and pediatric floor in February 2012. [4] [5] Renown raised $5.2 million for the 10 month construction project. [5] The remodeling of the floor was Renown's largest philanthropic project. [5]
