On May 12, 2007, Sunnyvale ISD residents approved a $25 million bond by a narrow 53% margin for the creation of a high school in Sunnyvale. For the 2007–2008 school year, ninth grade students were housed at the Sunnyvale Middle School campus, as were ninth and tenth graders for the 2008–2009 school year.
The district was established on February 26, 1953 after the mergers of the schools of Hattersville, Long Creek, New Hope, and Tripp. [1]Prior to fall 2007, [citation needed] Sunnyvale did not operate a high school; Sunnyvale's students were zoned to Mesquite ISD, [1] attending North Mesquite High School.
The district continues to open new schools as population growth increases the demands. For the 2022-23 school year, Prosper ISD opened a new school, Joyce Hall Elementary. In Fall 2023, Walnut Grove High School opened off the south side of East First Street, between Coit Road and Custer Road as a 5A school.
