It shares borders with the cantons of El Carmen, Chone, Pedernales, Puerto Quito, Quinindé, and Santo Domingo, which are part of the provinces of Manabí, Pichincha, Esmeraldas, and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, respectively. Its capital is the town of La Concordia.
Santiago was founded in 1495, originally on the banks of the Yaque del Norte River, but it is not yet very clear why it was moved in 1504 to the rural community of Jacagua, at the foot of the Diego de Ocampo peak.
