What kind of work does an I/O Psychologist do?

Industrial-Organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace. They get a feel for the personality of a company and the morale of employees, collaborate with management to conduct screenings and training sessions, and they develop plans so that employees and managers can work effectively toward company goals. They also help businesses hire the best employees, assess job performance, increase business efficiency, and study consumer behavior to improve marketing and increase sales.

I’d like to start working soon. How long does school take?

I/O psychologists require a master’s degree in psychology or related field. Some joint bachelor’s/master’s degree programs do exist as well as courses in business related to I/O Psychology. Typically, a bachelor’s degree program, which is the absolute minimum for psychology-related jobs, takes four years to complete; a master’s program can add two- to-four years to that.

My budget is limited. How much does it cost?

Depending on what program you need, the cost can vary. For a bachelor’s program, the average cost for tuition for an in-state student is $9,377, per year, not including expenses and supplies. The average cost of a master’s degree at a public school is around $66,340, just for tuition and fees says Educationdata.org’s 2022 data. Choosing an accredited education program or school might give you the opportunity to apply for financial aid to help pay for your education.

It’s been a while since I’ve been in school. How hard are the classes?

You’ll complete basic science and cognitive psychology classes in your bachelor’s program and more specific studies in your master’s. You’ll learn research methods and data analysis, performance evaluation and feedback, work motivation and attitudes, small group theory, organizational theory and development, engineering psychology, consumer psychology, and labor relations, as well as other industry-related topics. If you like working with people, resolving conflict, and are dedicated to making your work environment a healthy and productive place for employees, this may be a good career choice for you.

How much money can I make as an Industrial-Organizational Psychologist?

The national median annual salary for I/O psychologists rests at $105,310, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics 2023 data. That said, location, workplace, and experience may play key factors in your salary, as does education and whether you’re a self-employed consultant or employee of a company. The BLS reports that the highest 10% of the field made over $168,300 annually.
