What kind of work does a Surgical Technologist do?

Also called operating room technicians, surgical technologists assist in surgical operations. You’ll prepare operating rooms for surgery, sterilize and supply equipment, and prepare patients for surgery by washing incision cites. You’ll help surgeons and nurses during the procedure by passing them instruments and other sterile supplies. In addition to helping prepare for, and carry out surgeries, you may also prepare and dispose of specimens taken for lab analysis. With patients, you may apply dressings and help ease them into recovery rooms.

I’d like to start working soon. How long does school take?

All surgical tech programs fall into one of three categories: certificate, diploma, or associate’s degree. Certificate and diploma programs may take a year or less while an associate degree program generally takes two years to complete. To enter a program, you’ll need to have a high school diploma or GED. You may need to undergo a background check and, since you’re working in the healthcare field, provide documentation of all necessary immunizations. Many programs will also require you to have CPR certification.

My budget is limited. How much does it cost?

Depending on what program you need, the cost can vary, but since an associate degree is the general industry standard, you can expect to pay around $6,744 as an in-state student just for tuition alone, according to Educationdata.org. Choosing an accredited program might give you the opportunity to apply for financial aid to help pay for your education.

It’s been a while since I’ve been in school. How hard are the classes?

In a surgical tech program, you’ll learn the basics of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, microbiology, professional ethics, and medical terminology. Specific to your profession, you’ll learn about infection control, sterilization techniques, patient safety, OR prep, and proper handling of equipment and specimens. You should be able to deal with stressful situations, as the operating room can be hectic and demanding with life-threatening emergencies occurring despite careful planning.

How much money can I make as a Surgical Technologist?

The national median annual salary for surgical technologists rests at $60,610, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics 2023 data, with techs who work in outpatient care centers earning the most. That said, besides location, experience and education may play key factors in your salary. The BLS reports that the highest 10% of the field made over $83,150 annually.
