What kind of work does a Radiologic Technologist do?

Radiologic technologists use X-ray and other technologies to provide physicians and other health care workers the images necessary to diagnose and treat health care concerns. I’d like to start working soon. How long does school take?

You’ll need to graduate from an accredited 2-year associate degree program to get started as a radiologic technologist. For those already holding a degree, post-secondary certificate programs are available, and could help you enter the field faster if you’re thinking of making a career change.

My budget is limited. How much does it cost?

Depending on what program you need, the cost can vary. Generally, a 2-year associate degree program at a public college for in-state students costs around $3,372 per year for tuition says Educationdata.org. Choosing an accredited school or program might give you the opportunity to apply for financial aid to help pay for your education.

It’s been a while since I’ve been in school. How hard are the classes?

Your program should include classes in physics, principles of imaging, patient care, radiation protection, radiobiology, pathology, medical ethics, and patient positioning. You’ll also take core classes in anatomy, chemistry, biology, and physiology. You can also specialize later on in such areas as nuclear imaging, mammography, CT or MRI, or cardiovascular technologies.

How much money can I make as a Radiologic Technologist?

The national median annual salary for radiologic technologists rests at $73,410, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics 2023 data.
