Product Description

ASL 1 Lesson 1 & 2 Introduction to ASL and Deaf Culture is a 2 lesson introduction designed especially for junior high/middle school and high school students beginning ASL 1 for high school credit. (My objectives follow the TEKS for Texas but should be easily transferable to other state standards.)

Want to teach your middle schoolers ASL just for fun? American Sign Language would be a great time filler, higher-order thinking exercise, or behavioral management activity.

Are you a home school parent? I have used my ASL lesson plans in a home school-type school and students were able to successfully transfer to public schools and/or apply for college with credit for ASL as a foreign language. Tip: Print out the state standards for ASL or foreign language (if they're not separate categories in your state) and check off each standard as you do them as proof of earning this credit.

What to expect from this download?
In this download, I have included 2 mini-lessons. Every time I teach ASL, no matter the grade level or age (kindergarten all the way to adults) I always start Day 1 with these two lessons.

Day 1 of ASL should be about getting to know your students, getting students excited about learning ASL, and just having fun. Lesson 1 is titled “Why Should I Learn Sign Language?” and is about the benefits of learning ASL. Lesson 2 is titled “Myths About Deaf Culture” and is taught in game format.

I just couldn’t see providing one lesson without the other. I have always taught them this way on Day 1 and they have always been a hit. Students come back for Day 2 (a much slower-paced day) ready to learn more!

I have separated Day 1 into two lessons because of the differing objectives, but feel free to use them any way you see fit for your individual class. This could include:
•Teaching Lesson 1 and 2 in the same class period
•Using them as separate mini-lessons to introduce that students will be learning ASL soon
•Teaching Lesson 1 on Day 1 and Lesson 2 on Day 2 and filling the time with other work. Ex.:
• Researching the history of ASL on iPads

What's included:

  • Teacher guide: 38 pages, direct instruction guidelines/objectives/suggestions/etc., pre-/post-/formative assessments, anticipatory sets, closures, resources, etc.
    • Notes for teaching the power points (29 pages)
    • Exit tickets for Lesson 1 (1 page)
    • Lesson 2 worksheet and answer key (2 pages)

  • "Why Should I Learn Sign Language?" power point (13 pages)
  • "Myths About Deaf Culture" power point (38 pages)

These files are in one compressed ZIP file. To access the files:
1. right click zipped file
2. Open with > Windows explorer
3. click "extract all" (it should be on the top right)

I hope you enjoy this product! More lesson plans will be coming soon and eventually will be bundled! I will also eventually upload my lesson plans for ASL 2 and 3!
