What Is Medicare Supplemental Insurance?
Medicare Supplemental Insurance is a health insurance policy that helps pay for the healthcare costs that your Original Medicare plan does not cover. These policies are sold by private insurance companies to fill in the “gaps” left by Medicare.
Who Is Eligible?
You must be covered in Original Medicare and no other type of health insurance, including Medicare Advantage Insurance plans, employer/union group coverage, Veterans Administration (VA) benefits, or TRICARE.
What Kind Of Supplemental Insurance Plans Are There?
In order to be designated as a Medicare Supplemental plan or “Medigap” insurance plan, each company must follow state and federal laws designed to make the buying process easier for the consumer. All Medigap policies are identified by the letters A, B, C, D, F, High-Deductible F, G, K, L, M and N (these letters are NOT related to Medicare Parts A, B, C, & D). Each Medicap policy must follow the same benefits, no matter which insurance company sells it. The cost is usually the only difference between Medigap policies. There may also be exceptions if you’re a resident of Massachusetts, Minnesota, or Wisconsin.
Who Provides Medigap Insurance?
Medicare Supplemental Insurance, or Medigap, is offered by private insurance companies such as Mutual of Omaha, Anthem, BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare and many others. These companies can ONLY sell you a standardized policy. All policies must have the same standard benefits so that you can easily compare the price.
How Much Does It Cost?
Basic benefits in each standardized Medicare Supplemental Insurance plan are identical from one company to the next. What differs is the premium. Our Medicare Market team can match you with a licensed insurance agent who will be able to find you a plan that works for you and your budget.
