Using Military Records Online

The best way to find out about people who served in the armed forces is through military records. While you can submit an official request to the military branch, it can take months or longer until you get a response. You can view the same records online after paying a fee or signing up for a trial on the right site. Most of these records fall into one of three categories.

Discharge Records

One of the main records available for those who served in the military is discharge records. Each branch of the military offers different types of discharges. Those who fulfill their commitments leave with a clean record and an honorable discharge. A medical discharge refers to those who leave the military because of medical reasons. This can include individuals discharged during or right after basic training because of issues with their feet or backs. The military can also issue a dishonorable discharge, which occurs when someone does something that violates military practices.

Pension Records

The type of discharge granted to a soldier can determine the benefits that the person gets. Those who receive a dishonorable discharge typically do not get access to the GI Bill, which helps them pay for college and for other benefits such as home or business loans. You can use pension records to see if the individual received a pension for his or her military service, including the amount of money the person gets and how long those benefits will last. The records may include information about benefits awarded to the spouse and children of a soldier who passed away.

Draft Records

During World War II and other major wars, the government instituted a draft. It required that all men over a certain age sign up for the draft unless they could prove that they could not serve in the military. The numbers randomly selected picked which men would enter the military. Men today must sign up for Selective Service to get financial aid for college and other benefits. It gives the government the right to draft men into the military during a national emergency. You can view those records to see if someone was drafted in the past or if someone received an exemption and did not enter the draft.

Other Military Records

There are other military records available today, including payrolls that show you how much soldiers earned for their service. You can also view records from volunteer branches of the military such as the National Guard. No matter what type of military records you want to find, you can access them online.
