The NPI Number (National Provider Identifier) is the only healthcare provider identifier that can be used for identification purposes in standard transactions by covered entities. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requires that covered entities use NPI numbers in standard transactions. The NPI number must be used in lieu of legacy provider identifiers, such as UPIN in the HIPAA standards transactions to process all medical claims.

Search the NPI Registry for any healthcare provider. Search by Group or Individual Name or NPI Number. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has developed the NPPES to assign a unique 10-digit NPI number to all health care providers in accordance to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996.

The NPI registry is updated regularly but not in real time. Names are also spelled with different variations, such as "Leslie" vs "Lesly" vs "Lesley" and "Smith" vs "Symthe". You can try searching similar names which may help you find the correct provider regardless of spelling. Additionally, some providers in the database do not keep their information up-to-date when their practice changes or moves.
